Periodontology
Periodontology is the field of dentistry focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth. Gum disease (periodontal disease) is typically a painless, chronic inflammatory condition that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Since early symptoms are often subtle, most patients rely on their dentist to detect it. A thorough oral examination and dental X-ray are essential for diagnosis.
Warning signs may include bleeding gums during brushing, gum recession, and increased tooth mobility. In advanced cases, teeth may need to be removed — even if they are not decayed or painful — because of severe bone loss around them. These missing teeth can later be replaced with dental implants or traditional restorations.
Treating gum disease is a multi-step process, where regular check-ups and professional cleanings play a key role. One of the most important procedures is called closed curettage, where inflamed tissue, infected root surfaces and calculus below the gumline are removed under local anesthesia. In more severe cases, open curettage may be required, involving surgical access to clean the area more thoroughly. In some cases, regenerative materials can also be used to help restore lost bone and soft tissue.
However, gum recession does not always indicate gum disease. It can also develop after orthodontic treatment or due to overly aggressive brushing, especially in areas where the bone is anatomically thinner. In such cases, a minor surgical procedure called recession coverage can help restore both aesthetics and function by covering the exposed root surface. It’s also crucial that the gums surrounding dental implants have adequate quality and thickness, as this contributes significantly to the long-term success of implant restorations.
Treating periodontal disease is not a one-time intervention—it requires ongoing care and maintenance. The key to successful therapy is regular follow-up and supportive periodontal treatment, built on a long-term partnership between patient and doctor. Our expert team is committed to providing every patient with the attention, care, and empathy needed to make the treatment process reliable, comfortable, and effective.
